PROF. JAVED KHAN LECTURE SERIES - 2018-19

Held from 23rd to 27th February 2019

“AT COLLEGE SEMNAR HALL”

The Oriental College of Law organised ‘Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series’. The event scheduled from 23rd to 27th of February 2019 and was the successive event put up by the College with the enormous support by the Management.

Day 01- 23-02-2019

The lecture series was inaugurated at the college seminar hall by our Guest of Honour Prof. Javed Khan, the Chief Guest Hon’ble Judge Mrs Revati Kante (Jt. Civil Judge JD & JMFC, Vashi, Navi Mumbai), Senior Advocate D’ Silva, Senior faculty Adv. Dr. Prakash Deshmukh and Dr. P.Y. Gaonkar, Principal, Oriental College of Law. The event was inaugurated with lightning of the lamp by the dignitaries with big applause around fully packed seminar hall.

The lecture series commenced with the welcome address by Dr. P.Y. Gaonkar, Principal,Oriental College of Law, further by the words of knowledge and wisdom of Chief Guest Hon’ble Judge Mrs Rewati Kante (Jt. JD & JMFC Vashi), who emphasized on the ethical code of conduct of an Advocate with some examples from her own experience. She further stated that advocate should honestly justify his Advocacy in representing his client in the court of law in a proper framework of law. The event was followed by the lecture delivered by Senior Adv. D’ Silva who was the speaker of the day with his energetic talk on legal Administration in India. The lecture was very interactive and many of our students actively interacted with the guest. The event was concluded by the address of the Guest of Honour Prof. Javed Khan narrating his achievements in the academic field.

Day 02- 25-02-2019

The second day of the lecture series started with the address by our Principal Dr. P.Y. Gaonkar. He gave the brief introduction of our speaker of the day Hon’ble Dr. D. K. Sonawane, who guided us on the usefulness of CrPC and its incorporation of certain law by clearing the ambiguity between different section in the context of issue process and police investigation respectively. The students had good interaction with him.

Day 03- 26-02-2019

The third day of the lecture series started with the address by our Principal Dr. P.Y. Gaonkar. He gave the brief introduction about speaker of the day Hon’ble Mrs. Meera Bansode (Sr. Police Inspector, CBD Belapur) who delivered a lecture on woman empowerment and their rights. The lecture was quite interactive and awareness creative in context of woman safety and the do’s and don’ts of the social life.

Day 04 – 27-02-2019

The fourth day of the lecture series started with the address by our Hon’ble Adv Dr. Prakash Deshmukh. He gave the brief introduction of speaker of the day Hon’ble Judge M. R. Deshpande (Secretary District Legal Services Authority) who delivered the lecture on legal Aid and importance of Lok Adalat. The lecture was quite interactive and informative clearing the doubts on certain parameters of availing legal aid for domestic and social justice.

The entire Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series was quite qualitative in equipping the law students for better legal profession. It surely has created an everlasting effect upon the lives of the upcoming lawyers who not only gained knowledge of books but also experienced the life of judiciary while they are into the practice.

Fifth Lecture - “Judicial History of Women Development” - Adv. Smt. Neeta Karnik

Oriental Education Society’s, Oriental college of Law, Sanpada has organized “Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series” from 4th March to 8th March 2018.

After inauguration of this lecture series by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court, Fifth Lecture was delivered on 8th March 2018 by Smt. Neeta Karnik, Advocate, High Court, Bombay. Her topic was “Judicial History of Women Development”. She was welcomed by Dr. Shitala Gavand, Principal, Oriental College of Law.

Adv. Smt. Neeta Karnik explained various important judicial decision which boosted the concept of women development and she also highlighted the further measures required to be taken in this behalf.

After question answer session, vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Shitala Gavand, Principal, Oriental College of Law and she expressed her gratitude toward all the dignitaries who delivered lectures in this lecture series. She also thanked Prof. Rupali Jamode and Prof. Ravnish Bector their co-operation and contribution in this lecture series. She expressed her gratitude towards management of Oriental Education Society for their constant support. She thanked the entire teaching, non teaching and technical staff and students for making this lecture series a grand success.

Fourth Lecture - “Law of Writs” - Adv. Sachindra Shetye

Oriental Education Society’s, Oriental college of Law, Sanpada has organized “Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series” from 4th March to 8th March 2018.

After inauguration of this lecture series by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court, Fourth Lecture was delivered on 7th March 2018 by Shri. Sachindra B. Shetye, Advocate, High Court, Bombay. His topic was “Law of Writs”. He was welcomed by Dr. Shitala Gavand, Principal, Oriental College of Law.

Adv. Shri. Sachindra B. Shetye explained various types of writs with reference to constitutional provisions by giving examples of current important cases viz. beef ban, dahi handi, haji ali dargah, acquisition of lands, etc. He explained the procedural aspect and the circumstances in which writ petitions are entertained by the constitutional courts.

With examples he narrated the concept of public interest litigations and also explained the reactions of the Courts when a PIL is found to be publicity interest litigation. After question answer session, vote of thanks was proposed by Adv. Shreekant Gavand.

Third Lecture - “Election Litigations” - Adv. Shreekant Gavand

Oriental Education Society’s, Oriental college of Law, Sanpada has organized “Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series” from 4th March to 8th March 2018
After inauguration of this lecture series by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court, Third Lecture was delivered on 6th March 2018 by Shri. Shreekant Gavand, Addl. Public Prosecutor, High Court, Bombay. His topic was “Election Litigations” He was welcomed by Mrs. Rupali Jamode, Asst. Professor, Oriental College of Law.
Adv. Shri. Shreekant Gavand highlighted the constitutional provisions and the statutory provisions in respect of elections under Representation of Peoples Act and acts pertaining to Local Self Government. While narrating various stages in election processes, he explained the instances which give rise to litigations, pre-election litigation and post election litigation, various disqualifications. He also briefly narrated importance of requirement of filing nominations accompanied by affidavits setting out various particulars of the candidate. Lastly he briefly pointed out importance of Local Authority Members Disqualification Act. After question answer session, vote of thanks was proposed by Final Year Student, Mrs. Shital Dixit.

Second Lecture - “Criminal Trials” - Adv. Niranjan Mundargi

Oriental Education Society’s, Oriental college of Law, Sanpada has organized “Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series” from 4th March to 8th March 2018.

After inauguration of this lecture series by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court, Second Lecture was delivered on 5th March 2018 by Shri. Niranjan Mundargi, Advocate, High Court, Bombay. His topic was “Criminal Trials” He was welcomed by Dr. Shitala Gavand, Principal, Oriental College of Law.

Adv. Shri. Niranjan Mundargi explained all the stages involved in a criminal trial. He narrated the importance of effective cross examination and advised the students that observation of actual trials is very important for acquiring art of cross examination. He also pointed out various precautions required to be taken by defense advocates. After question answer session, vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Mrs. Rupali Jamode.

PROF. JAVED KHAN LECTURE SERIES – 2017-18

Oriental Education Society’s, Oriental college of Law, Sanpada has organized “Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series” from 4th March to 8th March 2018. This lecture series has been organized with an idea to invite legal dignitaries to deliver speech on different legal topics and give an opportunity to the students in Law College to interact with legal experts. Having regards to the inspiring journey of life, as a mathematics Professor to Education Minister, Maharashtra State, this lecture series has been name after Prof. Javed Khan, President, Oriental Education Society.
On 4th March 2018 this lecture series was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, Bombay High Court as the Chief Guest of the inaugural function. The said inaugural ceremony was attended by Prof. Javed Khan as the guest of honour and by Adv. Ram Apte, Senior Counsel, High Court , Bombay, Adv. Shreekant Gavand, Addl. Public Prosecutor, High Court, Bombay and Shri. Niranjan Mundargi, Advocate, High Court, Bombay as the distinguished guests.

After lighting of the lamp by the guest, all the dignitaries on the dais were felicitated. Thereafter Dr. Mrs. Shitala Gavand, Principal, Oriental College of Law gave welcome speech and introduced the guest and assured the students that every year, this fest of knowledge shall be organized. Asst. Prof. Rupali Jamode hosted the programme.

Adv. Dr. Prakash Deshmukh also in his speech congratulated the Principal for taking efforts in organizing this lecture series. Advocate Shri. Ram Apte Sir welcomed the initiative of organizing such lecture series for the welfare of students and explained the benefits which the law students would get from interacting with imminent practicing lawyers.
Prof. Javed Khan in his speech narrated the importance of effective discussion of legal issues of social importance and encouraged the law students to take initiative in this behalf.
Finally the Chief Guest of the event, Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka, Judge, High Court, Bombay, congratulated Oriental College of Law for organizing such lecture series for overall development of law students and he delivered his speech on the topic “Changes in scenario of legal Education” Justice Shri. Abhay Oka Sir very beautifully narrated the development of legal education from British era till date. He also highlighted the major changes brought by Advocates Act, 1961 in the concept of legal education, classes of advocates and justice delivery system. He further pointed out that for making improvement in quality of legal system; there should be effective improvement in legal education. Quality education would produce good prosecutors; good law officers and in turn it would have better effect on administration of justice.
He also briefly informed various career options available after taking legal education. While harping upon necessity of improvement in standard of legal education, he expressed deep concern for shortage of teachers in law colleges. Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka said that the law students from beginning itself, can consider the option of joining judiciary and explained the benefits involved in joining the judiciary and at the same time he explained that the job satisfaction which one gets in judicial service is much higher and same cannot be equated with anything else. Justice Shri. Oka called upon all law colleges to give effective information to the students in respect of joining judiciary as a career option.
At the end Hon’ble Shri. Justice Abhay Oka gave his best wishes to the Oriental College of Law. Thereafter many students interacted with Justice Shri. Oka and Adv. Shri. Ram Apte, Senior Counsel, High Court, Bombay in question and answer session.
At the end, vote of thanks was delivered by Adv. Shreekant Gavand, Addl. Public Prosecutor, High Court, Bombay and programme was concluded with national anthem.
In this Prof. Javed Khan Lecture Series, on 5th March 2018 Mr. Niranjan Mundargi, Advocate, High Court will deliver lecture on topic “Criminal Trials”, on 6th March 2018 Adv. Shreekant Gavand, Addl. Public Prosecutor, High Court will deliver lecture on topic “Election Litigations”, on 7th March 2018 and on 8th March 2018 i.e. on International Women’s Day Smt. Neeta Karnik, Advocate, High Court will deliver lecture on topic “Judicial History of Women Empowerment.
